No matter what industry you work in, it is bound to have a set of terms that only people familiar to the business will understand. You make the terms part of your daily speech, and use the words in all conversations related to your line of work. People smile and nod as you excitedly speak about your work, using all of the industry jargon that makes you sound like you know your business well.
Have you ever stopped to ask yourself how often people are smiling and nodding because they have no idea what you are actually saying? You might be surprised at just how often it is the case.
According to Chris Young of B2CY Connection Solutions, it’s something that often comes naturally when we begin working at a new job or in a new industry.
“We reach the stage of needlessly complicated. This is when we discover our five dollar words and we start substituting them for our 50 cent words. This is when we start confusing people.”
Rather than making our business pitch to potential customers in words that they will understand, we use words from our industry that they can’t relate to. Citing Chris’s example of the Tim Horton’s-like scenario: “We’ve increased the fluid retention capacity of our reservoir hot beverage containers… no, you’ve made the cups bigger.”
